KTLA in Los Angeles recently reported that a Pennsylvania grocer had to discard more than $35,000 worth of food after a woman purposefully coughed on groceries throughout the store. The woman is now facing criminal charges. One serious charge against her includes making a terrorist threat.
According to a statement made by a spokesperson for the Howard Township Police Department, the unidentified woman entered Gerrity’s Supermarket located in Howard Township, and she began coughing over fresh produce, baked goods from the bakery, packages of meat, and other products in the store.
Not too long after noticing the woman’s actions, Geritty’s Supermarket owner, Joe Fasula wrote a message to the community on a Facebook post that grocery store staff removed the woman and called police.
Because coughing is one of the primary ways that the Covid-19 virus is transmitted, the store was forced to discard all of the food that they believed the woman intentionally contaminated.
“I am absolutely sick to my stomach about the loss of food,” Fasula said. “While it is always a shame when food is wasted, in these times when so many people are worried about the security of our food supply, it is even more disturbing.”

Tensions and anxiety are running high as the nation tries to minimize the spread of Covid-19. The United States Department of Justice said in a recent memo that the Covid-19 virus is classified as a “biological agent” and by threatening to spread or “use Covid-19 as a weapon against Americans” does constitute a terrorist threat.
