For a parent, there is nothing worse than losing a child. On Monday, such a tragedy was made worse when the driver of an SUV struck and killed an 11-year-old girl and callously left the scene. Now Highland Police are asking for the public’s help in locating that hit-and-run driver.

KTLA reports that the incident happened at approximately 8:30 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Church Street and Glenheather Drive. 11-year-old Annika Fullerton of Denver, Colorado, was walking with her cousins in the neighborhood when she was struck by a silver or light-colored minivan or crossover SUV. The driver did not stop or attempt to render aid to the girl.
Police and emergency responders were called to find the girl unresponsive. Annika was rushed to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Authorities say that she died at the hospital a short time later.
Local family members are understandably devastated by the loss. Donna Eady, Annika’s aunt, the girl, and her mother, who had just completed her last round of chemotherapy in December, had come to the area to spend time with family.
“She was coming back to feeling like she has a normal life,” Eady said of her sister. ”And now her life will never be normal again. Never.”
The police are asking eyewitnesses or anyone with any information about the driver or vehicle involved in the fatal crash to contact Deputy T. Houn with the Highland Police Department’s Detective Bureau at (909)425-9793.
