NBC Los Angeles has an update on the driver in Phoenix who crashed a car into a bike race and had to be shot to be stopped.
Shawn Michael Chock was indicted on nine counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and one count each of fleeing an accident and unlawful flight. He is to be arraigned today in Navajo County Superior Court.
The report states that bicyclists were gathered for the annual Bike the Bluff race in Show Low, three hours northeast of Phoenix, on June 19. Witnesses say that Chock drove into the crowd and that bodies were flying left and right. After Chock struck a telephone pole and tried to back out, members of the crowd pounded on the vehicle trying to get his attention. He ignored them, turned around, and tried to go through the crowd again before going down the road, away from the scene.
Police ended up finding the driver at a nearby hardware store. After a confrontation, police had to shoot him. He was taken to Flagstaff for treatment and was released on July 2. He is currently in the Navajo County jail.
We are glad to hear that none of the bicyclists died in the impact, and hope that the injured ones can secure compensation should their cases hold up in court.
