A violent crash in Newport Beach early Tuesday morning has left one person dead and another seriously injured.
ABC Channel 7 in Los Angeles reports that the California Highway Patrol has issued a statement regarding the crash. At approximately 1:00 A.M., Newport Beach police officers were in pursuit of a Mercedes Benz that had been speeding.
The driver of the Mercedes lost control when attempting to make a turn near the intersection of Balboa Boulevard and 24th Street and struck a palm tree.
The force of impact of the speeding vehicle with the tree caused the car to split in half, sending debris flying. The engine was found 100 feet away from the crash site while a tire from the Mercedes was recovered more than 200 feet away.
The 29-year-old male driver of the Mercedes died at the scene of the crash. A female passenger who was also in the vehicle was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Officials say that her injuries have been described as major.
Their identities have not been released at this time.
Authorities say that the Newport Police Department received a call about an incident at an area bar. It is unclear if the suspect in that incident was related to the deadly crash.
The accident is still currently under investigation, and it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol impairment played any role in the accident.
