A strange crash happened yesterday on I-5 near Carlsbad involving a car that suddenly flipped on the roadway. NBC San Diego reports.
A 23-year-old driving a Hyundai Elantra was going northbound near Tamarack Avenue in the early morning hours. For unknown reasons, the vehicle flipped while driving and crashed into the center divider before spinning out and coming to a stop in the roadway.
The driver was either ejected from the vehicle during this or left the vehicle on their own before two more vehicles struck the Elantra and the driver. He was killed at the scene. Drivers in the other two cars were also injured, but were treated at the scene.
Police have no leads about why the car suddenly flipped over and are seeking information from the public. If you know anything, please call the CHP Oceanside Office.
We can only speculate about the reasons why a car would flip suddenly like that. They could have hit some road debris, or swerved suddenly to avoid an animal while going fast. The car could have also been top-heavy, although this is unlikely given the model. Tall vehicles like SUVs and box trucks must take care on sharp turns to avoid tipping over.
Our condolences go out to the family of the victim.
