An accident can happen at any time, anywhere and to anyone. It doesn’t matter if you take every precaution and follow all of the rules of the road; there will always be the potential for an accident to happen. Accidents involving 18 wheelers or big rigs are among the most severe accidents. Because these vehicles are so much bigger and heavier than anything else on the road, a crash involving a big rig can cause serious injuries or even fatalities.

The Modesto Bee reports that such an accident occurred on Interstate 5 just south of the San Joaquin and Stanislaus County line on Thursday, May 9th. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident happened around 12: 20 a.m. when CHP officers from the Modesto office found a 2018 Nissan had rear-ended a 2018 Volvo tractor-trailer rig at a high rate of speed. Emergency crews were called to the scene of the accident and pronounced the male driver of the Nissan dead at the scene of the crash.
The victim has been identified as Lance Ober, 50, of Studio City. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Waheed Khan, 32, of Stockton, and a passenger, Bradlee Gomes, 25, of Modesto were uninjured in the accident.
CHP investigators have not yet determined if drug or alcohol impairment also played a role in the fatal crash. Reports indicate that the CHP did receive a call regarding a reckless driver on Interstate 5 just before the accident. The CHP now believes that the call was most likely referring to Ober.
The accident is still currently under investigation.
