A driver that crashed into three other vehicles on Highway 180 was arrested on Saturday night on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Fresno Bee reported that on Saturday, March 9th at approximately 8:30 p.m., an unidentified male driver was traveling westbound when he suddenly drove across the median and into oncoming eastbound traffic just east of Academy Avenue.
According to California Highway Patrol spokesman, Victor Taylor, the driver crashed into three vehicles. He then fled the scene of the multi-vehicle crash on foot. Police officers found and apprehended the man approximately a mile away from the crash site. Taylor said in a statement that the man was then booked into Fresno County Jail. He is currently facing the felony charges of DUI and hit and run from the scene of an accident.
Some occupants of the other three vehicles in the crash suffered injuries that authorities have listed as ‘moderate.’
Law enforcement officials say that this latest DUI crash reminds them of another recent crash which happened in almost the same area of Highway 180 in which Fresno Police Officer, Phia Vang, 48 was killed on February 4th. In the earlier fatal crash, a man who was also driving under the influence of alcohol drove his eastbound pickup truck into the westbound lanes of Highway 180. The driver collided with multiple vehicles before striking Vang’s pickup truck head-on.
Both Vang and the wrong-way driver in the February 4th crash were pronounced dead at the scene.
