Those bars that hang below the rear end of a semi trailer aren’t just for providing a step. They are also a warning for drivers to stay back. Crashing into the back of a trailer has a very high fatality rate. Another example just happened in Bonsall according to Fox 5 San Diego.
The accident happened on I-15 southbound just north of the exit ramp to Old Highway 395. According to the police report, a Dodge Charger was speeding to pass other cars on the freeway. However, the driver miscalculated and crashed into the back of the truck, wedging his car underneath.

This is the reason rear-end accidents are so dangerous with big rigs. Trailers ride higher than other vehicles. A small enough car can slip underneath and bypass most of the safety features meant to keep drivers and passengers safe. It’s quite likely that the bottom edge of the trailer hit the windshield, and then kept going.
The driver of the car was killed at the scene. The big rig driver was unhurt. Officers spent about 4 hours clearing the scene and finishing their investigation.
Please be careful around big rigs on the interstate. Stay well behind them and don’t pass too close in front of them.
