Police Searching For Tesla Driver Who Abandoned Passenger After Crash

Authorities are searching for a driver who slammed his Tesla into the garage at a residence in Covina this weekend.  A passenger inside the vehicle was injured and left behind.

ABC News in Los Angeles reports that the crash happened on the evening of Saturday, October 12th.  California Highway Patrol Officers attempted to pull the driver of a Tesla Model 3 over for driving recklessly along the 10 Freeway.

As the officer attempted the traffic stop just east of Azusa Avenue.  The driver continued northbound on the freeway and proceeded to Workman Avenue with the CHP in pursuit.

According to a statement given by California Highway Patrol Spokesperson Patrick Kimball, the CHP officers later called off the chase because high speeds posed a danger to the public.   A short time later, the driver crashed his car into a residence, causing a great deal of damage to the home’s garage.

Neighbors and eyewitnesses to the crash told ABC that when the driver hit a curb at a nearby intersection, the Tesla driver lost control. The vehicle became airborne and was sent spinning into the home.  The force of the impact pushed a car parked in the garage out the side of the structure.

The driver of the Tesla fled the scene of the crash on foot.  CHP officers combed the surrounding residential area for the driver but were unable to locate him.

A female passenger who was left inside the vehicle was transported to an area hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

The crash is currently under investigation. Law enforcement said that the driver was still at large at the time of the report.
