A 12-year-old student was killed last week in South Los Angeles as he was walking to school.
The CBS Local station in Los Angeles reports that the pedestrian crash happened on the morning of Tuesday, March 10th, at the intersection of Woodlawn and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department told CBS reporter, Jake Reiner, that the fatal accident happened at approximately 7:30 A.M. that morning.
A female driver was heading southbound in her maroon GMC Yukon SUV on Woodlawn, and while making a left turn from Woodlan onto MLK Boulevard, she struck the boy.
Despite the best efforts by paramedics, the boy died at the scene of the accident.
The woman who struck the child with her vehicle was reported to have stayed at the scene of the accident. She is fully cooperating with police investigators.
Law enforcement officers investigating the crash are uncertain whether the wet, rainy weather may have played a role. The LAPD is asking anyone who may have seen what happened or have cellphone video to come forward.
Officials say that there is a surveillance video that was obtained near the scene. The video is not being released at this time.
Detective Supervisor Moses Castillo, with the LAPD, advises motorists that every time anyone gets behind the wheel, they are driving a deadly weapon. “Slow down,” Castillo said. ”It’s better to lose a minute of your life than to lose your life in a minute.
