Street vendors are a common site in Los Angeles, but selling on the roadside has its risks. A white van, according to CBS, hit two fruit drink vendors in Ontario. One man was killed, and the other is critically injured.
Ontario police say that the driver of the white van is suspected of DUI. She struck the vendors around 11 a.m. this morning. A witness says she didn’t hit her brakes and went around another car in the fast lane while the vendors were crossing the street.
Both of the vendors were well known in the local community, and several members expressed their condolences to the media. The witness also said that one of the vendors was dragged by the van after the collision.
The driver was caught and arrested for DUI and for gross vehicular manslaughter.
It is unclear from the article if the vendors were crossing against the light or not, or if they were crossing at a crosswalk. However, if the other driver was DUI, then that may not matter as much.
Furthermore, zooming around another car like that could be considered reckless driving. However, without all the details, we can only speculate about the exact conditions of the crash.
We wish to express our condolences as well and hope that the families of the victims can receive some sort of compensation from the driver or their insurer.
