According to a statement given by California Highway Patrol (CHP) Public Information Officer Roberto Gomez, the tanker driver attempted to make an unsafe turn. During the maneuver, the big rig overturned, and the rear portion of the tanker crushed a white SUV. In a chain reaction, a pickup truck then slammed into the back of the overturned tanker truck.
Both the truck driver and the SUV driver were injured in the crash and were transported to an area hospital for treatment. The truck driver suffered lacerations to his face. The driver of the SUV complained of shoulder pain immediately following the crash.
The driver of the pickup truck was reported to have been uninjured in the crash.
Gomez told reporters that some milk from the tanker truck leaked out onto the pavement, however, the leak was quickly stopped. “There was a minor spill,” he said.
Traffic was diverted off the freeway at Broadway and around the accident.
Investigators do not believe that drugs or alcohol played any role in the accident.
