According to Hometown Station, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will pay a $6 million settlement over an unsafe road that has killed several people.
The lawsuit stems from a 2016 crash where a college student hit an oak tree and fell into a ravine on Bouquet Canyon Road. She was trying to negotiate a curve and lost control, flying to the outside and striking the tree.

Just five months earlier, another young driver died at the same spot. He also hit a tree. The plaintiffs in the case say that if the county had installed a guardrail on the curve then these deaths wouldn’t have happened. The county’s lawyers recommended a settlement due to the uncertainty of litigation.
Since the accident, the county has installed a guard rail and reduced the speed limit from 55 to 45 in that section.
It’s our responsibility to be safe drivers, but it’s also the responsibility of governments to provide safe roadways. Roads that are too dark to drive, have dangerous curves, or have inadequate safety features can open the government to liability cases like these.
