Police Capture Kidnapper After Slow Speed Chase

A Compton man has been arrested after he allegedly carjacked a vehicle with a 93-year-old woman and a 9-week-old baby inside over the weekend

ABC affiliate, KTLA reports that the incident happened on Saturday,  October 11 at approximately 2:45 p.m. when 22-year-old Maaliki Grant allegedly jumped into the diver’s seat of a vehicle left running at a fabric store near Maple Avenue and East Ninth Street.

Inside the car were a 93-year-old grandmother and her 9-week old grandchild.  An initial report from the Los Angeles Police Department originally incorrectly described the child as being 8-months old.

The mother who had been inside the store called 911 to report the incident. Police spotted the vehicle, but Grant refused to pull over.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said that Grant led officers on a slow-speed chase that lasted approximately 10 minutes.  Police laid out a spike strip to stop the vehicle. One police officer was reportedly seriously injured when Grant drove over the strip.

Grant was placed under arrest on two charges of kidnapping and carjacking, resisting arrest, and causing serious bodily injury to others.

The grandmother and baby were checked out at the scene and were uninjured. They have since been reunited with their family.

On Monday, October 19th, Grant pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles County District Court.  A judge set Grant’s bail at $2 million. Grant is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, November 2nd.

If convicted of the charges against him, Grant faces a possible sentence of up to life in prison.
