A DUI driver is being charged with gross vehicular manslaughter after he struck and killed a father of five in a DUI crash.
ABC 30 News reported that on Saturday, July 20th, Shawn Milton was assisting a homeless friend when his vehicle was struck by a man who was driving under the influence of alcohol. A shower of sparks streaking across the roadway can be seen on the video.
Milton is believed to have died instantly. His passenger is still currently in an area hospital with severe injuries.
Surveillance video captured the last few moments of Shawn Milton’s life. Investigators estimate that the driver who hit Milton’s vehicle was driving at least 70 miles per hour at the time of the fatal crash.
Shawn Milton’s mother, Dorothy Milton, is finding it hard to come to grips with the death of her son. She told ABC that she is grateful that her son got to spend the day talking and laughing with family and friends.
A photograph taken that day clearly shows the love between the family members. Little did anyone know that it would be Shawn’s last day on Earth. Shawn’s mom regrets not having been able to be there at the time or to give her son one last hug.
“He saw his kids, his dad, sisters, everybody was together, and they had a good day, and then that night this guy drives 70-80 mph through town and just slammed into him and ended his life then and there,” Dorothy said.
Milton leaves behind a wife and five children with a sixth child on the way. Shawn will be remembered for the fact that he always gave toward others wherever possible.
Police arrested the DUI driver in the case, Gustavo Blanco, 21, and charged him with gross vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and causing injury while driving under the influence.
Blanco is due to appear before the judge later this week.
