Wheels have so many lug nuts for good reason. They have to put up with a lot of forces. If those nuts come loose or the wheel breaks loose for some reason, it puts all the drivers in the area at risk for injury.
The Press-Enterprise reported on such an incident where, sadly, a passenger died due to the wheel crashing through their windshield. The accident happened on April 25 in Corona on the 91 Freeway shortly after 5 p.m.
Officers came to the scene when they heard a crash was blocking lanes west of Lincoln Avenue. Police say that the left front wheel of a Ford Econoline van came off, strayed across the center divider across the express lanes, and bounced up into the windshield of the wrecked car in front of the passenger.

Firefighters took the injured passenger to a hospital, but were unable to save the passenger’s life. They were able to find the van in question. No one was injured. Police are seeking witnesses to the crash. Just last month, another person died in Norco in a similar accident on the 5 Freeway.
Our condolences go out the victims in this case. We hope that investigators find out why the wheel came off of the van and, if necessary, prosecute the responsible parties.
